Applications open for the Program of Church Management
While working in the Vatican, Card. George Pell felt the need for a course in management and finances in Rome. As His Eminence himself wrote in his Prison Journal (to be published by Ignatius Press on December 4 – pre-order here), he “became aware of the challenges there [in the Vatican] and elsewhere and the occasional mishaps which have occurred in every continent.” The Program of Church Management was developed by the Pontifical University of the Holy Cross in Rome as a consequence to his request in 2017.
Card. Pell expressed his complete support to the directors of the Program, adding that every Catholic country should create a similar course. Since then, the Program’s mission has been to faithfully serve the Church Universal in training priests, seminarians, religious and laity to give living witness to the Gospel of Jesus Christ by the exemplary stewardship of the Church’s temporal patrimony.
Now more than ever, dealing with money is an important element of the spirituality of any person entrusted with leadership roles within the Church. The current pandemic situation calls for a renewed awareness of the teachings on poverty of the Gospel, by offering an example of virtuous best practices and guaranteeing accountability. As Card. Pell says in his Journal
“Personal honesty and goodwill are no excuse for incompetence,
which makes corruption so much easier.”
On February 2021, the Program of Church Management will start its 4th edition. The Program is a one-year, part-time course with classes on Wednesday afternoons, plus 4 Intensive Weeks throughout the year. Classes provide instruction in management, economics, finance, business ethics and social teaching, in order to equip PCM’s participants with the skills needed to being transparent, accountable and thoroughly responsible for the Church’s assets, for the renewal and holiness of the Universal Church.
