Research Project

Background

This Research Project was born in the academic year 2021-2022, when a reflection process regarding the research began, thanks to the suggestion made by Pope Francis' Apostolic Constitution Veritatis gaudium.

The document revealed the fact that:

In this effort, the worldwide network of ecclesiastical universities and faculties is called to offer the decisive contribution of leaven, salt and light of the Gospel of Jesus Christ and the living Tradition of the Church, which is ever open to new situations and ideas. (Veritatis Gaudium; 3, c).

The occasion of the upcoming 40th Anniversary of the University in the Rector's Council presents us with the opportunity of fulfilling the Pope's wish.

With the aim of involving everyone in the process, the project has started from listening to the professors, who were invited to provide their suggestions on desirable research themes and methods, within a general framework.

The overall aim is to promote collaborative, interdisciplinary or trans-disciplinary, international research, in partnership with other pontifical, Catholic and lay universities, focused on themes of evangelizing value impact.

Creating Network

Hence, were created focus groups composed by professors from different fields, in order to promote and encourage dialogue between the Faculties. This promoted the creation of an environment in which professors had the opportunity to interact, exchange ideas and conceive strategic research topics for the future of the University. Through these multidisciplinary exchanges, the focus groups also contributed to the creation of new partnerships. A final document was drawn up, including all the different contributions and  priorities highlighted by the professors.

In the 2022 - 2023 academic year, the first Call for projects was held. As a result, 13 projects were presented which are involving 38 institutions from 17 different countries, for a total of 60 professors from our University and 49 from other academic institutions. Thus, the following 3 research groups were chosen by the Scientific Committee (made up of internal and external professors at the University):

The second Call for Projects started in September 2023 and submissions were accepted until February 2024. The evaluation of the new research project was submitted on May 2024. Thus, there were selected 4 new research groups:

Bacheca

On Thursday, December 5, 2024, (at 2:45 PM in the Aula Benedetto XVI), an interdisciplinary roundtable was held to present Issue 2 (2024), Volume 9 of the scientific journal Church, Communication and Culture, published by the School of Communication. This issue is dedicated to the theme "University and Catholic Identity."

Moderated by Professor Jordi Pujol from the School of Communication, the event featured presentations by Professor Elena Colombetti (School of Philosophy), Professor José María La Porte (School of Communication), Professor Stefan Mückl (School of Canon Law), and Professor Giuseppe Tanzella-Nitti (School of Theology). This was a valuable opportunity to reflect on the mission of Catholic universities in the contemporary landscape.

Setting the method, building up a lexicon

The historical method of inquiry is important but does not exempt the scholar from metaphysical commitment; on the contrary, it binds him more so, because it is able to provide a picture of philosophical options that is unprecedented in terms of precision and accuracy and thus provides ideal conditions for the search for truth.

This will be achieved through a combination of historical investigation and metaphysical analysis. The metaphysical analysis: the notion of the individual offers the possibility of a deep metaphysical investigation, grounded on a matching attitude between ancient and medieval traditions and new metaphysical perspectives.

Making the Bible a meaningful source of truth and salvation for contemporary man

On November 14 and 15, 2024, the Research Group Towards a Theology of Evangelization at the Pontifical University of the Holy Cross organized its second Expert Meeting, focusing on how to make the Bible a source of truth and salvation that remains meaningful for contemporary man.

The speakers present have sought to address questions centered around the Paschal Mystery of Jesus Christ, which is the key to the interpretation (hermeneutics) of the entire Sacred Scripture.

The Research Group ‘University and Catholic Identity’ of the University of the Holy Cross organised an Expert Meeting on 26 and 27 September on the mission, purpose, and future of Catholic academic institutions. Experts in communication, governance and theologians from Europe, America, Latin America and Asia from 19 different universities and the FIUC (International Federation of Catholic Universities) discussed the two-day event.
