"His kindness and patience throughout his illness will remain a profound example of great faith and hope for the entire academic community," said the University’s Rector, Rev. Prof. Fernando Puig. "We are confident that from Heaven he will continue to pray for the University and for all the people who, over his many years in Rome, came to know and appreciate him as a priest and as a professor."
Born in Madrid in 1964, Álvaro Granados graduated in Law from the Universidad de La Laguna in Tenerife in 1988. He later moved to Rome to study Fundamental Theology at Santa Croce, earning a doctorate in Philosophy in 1996. He was ordained a priest in 1994 and, between 1995 and 2006, served as a formator at the Sedes Sapientiae International Ecclesiastical College. He also served as Rector of the Collegio Sacerdotale Tiberino and earned a doctorate in Pastoral Theology in 2009 at the Lateran University.
The funeral chapel has been set up at the Parish of St. Josemaría Escrivá in the Ardeatino district of Rome, where in recent years Fr. Álvaro carried out intense pastoral work, exemplifying his priestly vocation despite suffering from ALS (Amyotrophic Lateral Sclerosis).
The funeral Mass will take place in the same parish on Sunday, January 26, 2025, at 10:30 a.m.
We join in the grief and prayers of his family for his eternal rest.
A memorial Mass will be celebrated at the Basilica of Sant'Apollinare, with further details to follow.
In the latest issue of Notizie dalla Santa Croce (p. 77), we dedicated an article to his testimony: "I have ALS, but I remain a priest to the very end."
